Hitting the ground running in 2019 with digital marketing for retailers

Like every year, 2018 saw a plethora of new and exciting trends in the digital marketing space. The vast majority of which were completely unexpected and unpredictable. Predicting the future in such a fast pace industry is a tough task, even for the top marketers among us. However, there are some trends which you can say, with some level of certainty, are likely to become the ‘next big thing’. We spoke to our experts here at Genie Goals, and asked them “which digital marketing trends can you see in 2019?”, and “How can marketers utilize these trends to hit the ground running next year?”. This is what they said:


We have seen artificial intelligence in digital marketing expanding enormously over the past few years. 2019 is likely to continue this move towards AI and machine learning. In the case of PPC; automation will probably one day replace humans in everything, from budget setting to campaign creation. We’ve already seen Google Ad copy suggestions arrive in 2018; it’s only a matter of time!

Automation is a good thing, especially in PPC. Letting the robots take care of the heavy manual labour will allow you more time for strategy and account growth.

Brand positioning

Brand positioning is an incredibly important practice, and is going to be bigger than ever in 2019. Almost every brand has realised the importance of getting their brand in the minds of the right people. Many brands however, leave it too late in the year; turning their focus when the traffic picks up and we move into peak trading. However, January and February are the months when you want to invest in your image. Brands who invest early see the payoff later in the year, with customers thinking of you and the connection you’ve made with them.


Another prediction for 2019 which seems pretty certain right now, is that Amazon will be the next big Paid Search Channel. Research has shown that the majority of product research begins on Amazon, and marketers are starting to take note.


If Instagram isn’t one of the power players already, it certainly is going to be in 2019. This year we saw the user base grow from around 400 million users to over a billion. With the start of the new year, brands must become aware of instagram, and the importance of advertising there – and thus advertise as frequently on Instagram as they do on Facebook.
